Strength training for cyclists

From track cycling to the road, a well-designed strength program is an essential part of an athlete performance optimisation program.

Firstly let’s dispel the myths:

  • For road cyclists who are concerned about body weight to power ratios – “I’ll build too much muscle”. This does not occur.
  • “I just need to ride more hills”. This is not pure strength training. Strength training needs to move towards high-load, low-velocity exercises.
  • How does it work (evidence-based)? Increased neuromuscular function, increased maximum voluntary contraction, increased force production, increased economy of movement, and reduced fatigability.
  • Do I need to allocate more time to do strength training? No. Evidence shows that matched training time (cycling only V cycling + strength training) leads to increased performance.

So if you are keen to undertake a customised strength training designed for your cycling goals contact us. Our RIS Performance Coach Tynan Shannon (NRS cyclist) and RIS Director Stuart Canavan (former team physio and performance director for Pats Veg Cycling, and wellbeing director for Drapac Pro Cycling) have assisted many cyclists – from club to world tour level – prepare for improved performance on the bike via approaches that use the latest evidence.

If you are not training strength you are not using the best approaches possible. We can deliver programs to you via TeamBuildr wherever you are based, particularly regionally based athletes.
